Toys Designed for Kids Who Have Special Needs

It can sometimes be difficult to find an appropriate gift for a child who has special needs. The recommended age that is listed on the box the toy comes in may, or may not, be useful information. Parents can consult toy companies that are special needs friendly, or catalogs of toys for the “differently abled.” Most parents have a pretty good idea of what kinds of toys their child would like to receive as a gift this year. Often, it is the other members of a child’s extended family that are unsure about what types of toys would be a … Continue reading

Where to Find the Toy Catalogs

What do your kids want for Christmas? This is the time of year when children start mentioning the things that they are hoping to get as gifts this year. Parents will want to check out the toy catalogs from various stores in order to find the best deal. Walmart has a toy catalog for you to check out. I don’t think that Walmart has always done this, but they do have one this year. Their toy catalog comes with a “Christmas Price Guarantee”. It works like this. You shop in a Walmart store (in other words, not from their website), … Continue reading

Shopping the Catalogs: Pet Lovers Paradise

‘Tis the season when catalogs clutter our mailboxes. Unlike some people who immediately toss them, I shop them. I never know what I might find, and this year I found a ton of cool stuff for pet and animal lovers and owners as well as for pets themselves. I don’t know if it’s because I’m paying more attention this year or if the catalog companies have caught on to our passion for pets. Whatever it is, it does seem like every catalog this year offered a bunch more pet products than ever before. Whether you’re a dog person, cat person, … Continue reading

Phew, it’s hot out there. Did you keep up with the Pets Blog last week? If not, here’s your chance to catch up on what Aimee and myself wrote about. So pour yourself a cool drink, settle back in a comfy chair, grab your mouse, and point and click to read what we covered on: Monday, August 6 Aimee profiled an ancient breed of dog, the Mastiff. Don’t Miss These Sales! – Weekend of December 17, 2011

This holiday season season seems to have more sales packed into it than I remember there being in previous years. Black Friday came early, and then stretched out all week long. There have already been sales on Christmas decorations, that didn’t used to happen until after Christmas. Here are some sales that are going on this weekend. Target has a sale that started on Friday, December 16, 2011, and that will continue through Saturday, December 17, 2011 at noon. There are “thousands” of deals, and you can get up to 40% off on things included in the sale. If you … Continue reading

All I Want for Christmas Scrapbook

Here is a fun idea for a holiday scrapbook. It’s an “All I Want for Christmas” scrapbook. You could create a quick, easy scrapbook for every member of your family. The title of the album is obvious but you may be wondering what to fill the pages with. The first page would simply be a picture of the family member that the scrapbook is about. Surrounding that picture would be pictures of all the things they are dreaming of for Christmas. You can find lots of pictures in the ads that come in your Sunday paper or in catalogs. Surrounding … Continue reading

Combatting Stereotypes in Children, Part One

Our kids are growing up in a global society where they will have to feel comfortable with people of other races and religions. I really recommend the book Hate Hurts: How Children Learn and Unlearn Prejudice and the resources I listed in my blog Resources for Talking about Skin Color. The Public Broadcasting Service website offers the following suggestions from experts who contributed to PBS shows: Be aware of how and when children’s attitudes are formed. Children develop attitudes and identity through their experiences with their bodies and their social environments. Very young children perceive differences in skin color but … Continue reading

Catalog Gifts for Cats and the People Who Love Them

Yesterday I listed some gifts for dogs and the people who love from a couple different catalogs. Today I’m going to do the same things for cat people. From Femail Creations Catffeinated Mug: If you’ve got any cat lovers who also happen to be coffee lovers on your holiday shopping list, they might get a big jolt out of this cup. $14. You Can’t Own a Cat decoration: This caught my eye because it looks like something from times gone by. (Like something from the turn of the 20th century perhaps.) But then I looked closer and saw the quote: … Continue reading

What’s Happening at the Mall? Part 2

As I mentioned in my previous blog, Whats Happening at the Mall? the kids and I went to the mall Saturday. We had a lot of fun finding deals and a bunch of goodies we each wanted. I asked my eight year old daughter what she learned from this shopping trip and she said, “Always use coupons and you will get more.” I think I have a coupon queen in the making! My daughter had the most fun at Limited Too. She received $5 off her purchase because she brought in her report card and showed it to the associate. … Continue reading

Author Interview – Tracy Winegar on Writing

Yesterday, we spoke with new author Tracy Winegar about her new book, “Keeping Keller.” It’s the story of a young boy who has autism and the struggles his parents face as they try to care for him without fully understanding his situation. If you missed our conversation and Tracy’s insights into autism, you can click here to get caught up. Tracy joins us again today to talk about the writing process. Thanks for being here, Tracy.
