In most cases, the deepest discounts are reserved for generic items. Cheap Ways to Liven Up a Locker

School lockers can be downright dreadful. Not only are they typically painted in a revolting shade of puke green, institutional gray or dingy yellow, but you also have to deal with exterior and interior cracks, dents and marks. To help cure the ugly locker blues while operating on a tight student budget, consider crafting the following affordable items: Decorative Magnets: Nothing helps liven up the interior of a locker easier and faster than a bunch of bedazzled magnets. The simple embellishments can help keep things in place, such as notes, photos, and homework assignments. What’s more, you can make almost … Continue reading

Cheap Summer Boredom Busters

We live about five blocks down from a city park which hosts organized summer recreational activities for underprivileged youth. Staffed with teens hired by the Parks and Rec Department, the program attracts dozens of kids who are anxious to have fun in the sun. Last week, my 7-year-old and I biked to the park to exercise on the playground equipment and were pleasantly surprised when a program staff member invited us to take part in one of the group’s activities: Bubble Blast. Since the program is run on limited funds, many of the group’s activities and projects are extremely affordable. … Continue reading

Places to Buy Really Cheap Books

I’m a bibliophile. No, this doesn’t mean I’m addicted to the Bible, although I believe in it. It means that I’m addicted to books. Hardback, paperback, adult, teen, children’s—I love them all. My goal is to someday have a room in my house that is lined with shelves on all sides and to have those shelves completely filled with books for the entire family. But those things can get expensive. Hardbacks sometimes go for around $30.00, depending on how thick they are, and your nicer coffee-table books are even more. How can we afford to keep ourselves and our families … Continue reading

Magazines on the Cheap

I rarely pay even half the subscription price for magazines. I suppose I could be even cheaper and just read them at the doctor’s office four months after publication, or take a trip to the library, but some of them I like to have for a hot bath or cup of tea at the table. So I make the choice to spend some of my hard-earned mad money on them. Or I don’t. A lot of magazines can be had for free if you’re keeping your eye out for them. Magazines make most of their money off their advertising. Your … Continue reading

Great Cheap Halloween Costumes for the Truly Frugal Mom

It’s the last minute – what will they wear?! Or perhaps maybe you just don’t have the finances to purchase thirty to fifty dollar costumes? Or maybe, just maybe you decided you wanted to try to be a bit original this year. Wherever you are, saving money on costumes is really nice, since typically a child only wears a costume once, and even if they have a younger sibling, often the younger sibling doesn’t want to be that thing ever. I have been collecting home-made costume ideas for years. Some I came up with my self, and some friends or … Continue reading

Benefits of Saving Your Scraps

One of the easiest ways to cut down on your scrapbooking bill is to save leftover supplies. Typically, I purchase embellishments for specific layouts, so it’s rare for me to have a ton of scraps. However, the leftovers I have are meticulously sorted and placed in an accordion file. You could sort them by color or manufacturer, but I find dividing scraps by theme is the method that works best for me. If you your scrap stash is dwindling or you just want to beef up your reserves, consider looking for extras in every day places. For example, wrapping paper, … Continue reading
