Did you know that there are certain times during the week when buying gas is cheaper? If you want to get the best deal on gas, it helps to know a little bit about the industry. For example, prices usually go up just before the weekend kicks off and just before holidays. To save money, fill up in advance.

The best days to purchase gas are usually early in the week. Tuesday is often the best day to top off the tank. The prices usually change in the morning, around 9:00 or 10:00 a.m. so watch for changes before getting gas. Sometimes it will only be a matter of a penny or two, but when gas prices are volatile, it can be the difference of 5 cents or more per gallon.

Shopping cards can also help you save money. If you use a Wal-Mart shopping card at the gas station affiliated with the store, you can save up to 3 cents per gallon. Some stations also offer gas rebate cards, and make sure to keep your eye out for coupons. Coupons are usually local offers so watch for them in the paper and make sure you aren't tossing gas offers with your junk mail.

Some gas stations also offer discount days or certain hours of the day when gas is cheaper, in order to generate more traffic. There will usually be a wait, which may be rather lengthy, so you will have to decide whether or not it's worth your time.

Start paying attention to the prices at stations along different routes you take. If you usually fill up near work, you may find that gas is cheaper at a different station somewhere along your route to work or closer to home. Keep an eye on each station and compare prices to see if the differences in price are consistent. You might save a good deal of money by simply changing your fueling habits.
