My Favorite Pet Blogs from the Past Year

Below is a list of my favorite articles I wrote during the past year, often with an explanation of what made them memorable. Five Non-Cash Ways to Help Animals/Shelters this Holiday Season: This was my first article to have a comment left on it. Is It Ever Okay to Kick a Dog?: This was my first article to ever get stars. The BMK Fund: This practice is very near and dear to my heart and it was neat to have a platform such as blogging for Families.com to share it on. How to Put Your Shopping Dollars to Work Helping … Continue reading

A Kinder, Gentler, Healthier Cup of Coffee

Good news, coffee lovers: coffee may just be good for you! Outside of caffeine addiction and calorie-laden specialty drinks, a cup of java does have some health benefits for us. The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, International Journal of Cancer, and Prevention magazine all agree: two or three cups of caffeinated drinks (including coffee) each day can give more than your energy level a boost! Cut your risk of dying from heart disease by thirty one percent or more. Lower your risk of developing colon cancer. Premium blends may be chock full of cancer-fighting antioxidants (some more than others). Want … Continue reading

Boca Java 4 – 8oz Coffee Sampler Pack for only $8 Shipped

I live in a town of about 6,000 permanent residents that “swells” to almost 10,000 in the summer. We have two stoplights on the main thoroughfare, and none anywhere else. The first is in front of the elementary school for the benefit of the schoolbuses, and the second is for the big coffee conglomerate. Yes, our little town supports three Starbucks. Count ’em, three. And they all seem to be thriving, despite the business they lose to the other four independent coffee stands on the same street. Even though we live in the Northwest, I confess that I’m not a … Continue reading

For the Coffee Lover in Your Life

Staples is clearing out their coffee gift sets. Right now, they have Harmony Bay Gourmet Collections on sale for $2.90 per set. Each set contains five 1.75 oz canisters including Belgian chocolate, eggnog, vanilla crème, holiday roast, and cinnamon pecan. My husband is a coffee drinker. For me, the occasional cup of instant is fine (if only it tasted as good as it smelled!). Not so with his palate. He really enjoys coffee, especially the flavored kind. During the week, it’s more a wake-up juice, but I try to have the good stuff for him on the weekends. It can … Continue reading

The Love and Marriage Experience

Recently one of our family members shared her love and marriage journey with us in a comment. It was a joy to read of her happiness and how thrilled she was that she didn’t settle for second best. Sometimes that can happen. There’s subtle pressure that builds up when all your friends are getting married or in serious relationships, to think what’s wrong with me? To think you need to join the clan and find someone of your own- anyone, so long as you have a partner. When our daughter was young, at times she bemoaned the fact that she … Continue reading

Actor Ricardo Montalban Dead at 88

Ricardo Montalban, known to a generation as Mr. Roarke from “Fantasy Island,” died yesterday at the age of 88. Cause of death has not been released, but his son-in-law Gilbert Smith said Montalban’s health had been deteriorating over the last several days. Montalban was born in Mexico City, Mexico on November 25, 1920. He starred in many Spanish language films before making his American film debut in Fiesta in 1947 alongside Cyd Charisse and Esther Williams. (This work, Fiesta, is in the public domain because it was published in the United States between 1923 and 1977, inclusive, without a copyright … Continue reading

Catalog Gifts for Cats and the People Who Love Them

Yesterday I listed some gifts for dogs and the people who love from a couple different catalogs. Today I’m going to do the same things for cat people. From Femail Creations Catffeinated Mug: If you’ve got any cat lovers who also happen to be coffee lovers on your holiday shopping list, they might get a big jolt out of this cup. $14. You Can’t Own a Cat decoration: This caught my eye because it looks like something from times gone by. (Like something from the turn of the 20th century perhaps.) But then I looked closer and saw the quote: … Continue reading

Ideas & Romance

Romance ideas sell more magazines, books and movies than sex. It should be telling that most people can figure out the latter, but the former should be offered at college level as a required course. The final wouldn’t even have to be a test, because life will offer enough pop quizzes on romance to fill an entire issue of just about any woman’s magazine. When men and women come together in relationships, they are often looking for partners that share common interests, common goals and with whom they wouldn’t mind seeing at 5 a.m. with no sleep and hair that … Continue reading
