Double Coupons and Double Talk

Double coupons are a great bonus for savings. For those lucky to live in areas where coupons are doubled routinely with few restrictions, you know the value of these for saving. For the rest of us, well, it's look for those opportunities and pay close attention to the rules. Policies concerning double coupons will vary from one company to another.

The big news in Ohio and west Virginia is that Kroger is TRIPLING coupons up to face value .50 cents. That's a great savings - be sure to shop sales, and match up your coupons for maximum deal hunting.

The buzz about Kmart continues - yes, some of their stores are doubling next week, and some are not. The word from Kmart is "All stores except locations in Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Guam, Virgin Islands, and select stores in CA, FL, IN, and PA are participating." Yet, there are reports of shoppers contacting their local Kmart and being told that their particular store is NOT participating. This seems to be more likely if you have not doubled before.

Some Kmarts limit the double coupons to ten coupons per visit. This makes it difficult to use the double coupon event to stockpile. Yet there are reports that in this Sunday's Redplum, Kmart has an ad announcing it's double coupons, which states that the limit is 75 coupons per day. If you get this insert with this ad, take it to your local Kmart - I doubt they will change the limit of 10, but it is worth a try.

The good news is that Kmart is doubling up to $2.

When shopping at any store with double coupons, be sure that you understand the store's policy. If the rules aren't posted, ask for a copy. It beats having arguments at the cash register. If you run into a cashier who does not understand doubling, or has a problem accepting your coupons in accordance with the store's policy, it helps if you have that policy in writing.

Sometimes you will find that some coupons carry the statement "do not double". You'll see those on a lot of blinkies and also in some newspaper insert coupons. Your store might opt to double it anyway, but that's a bonus, not an expectation.

You'll also find that some stores refuse to double printable coupons. To me this makes no sense. If you think it is fraudulent, don't accept it! But to the couponer, it is money no matter what. This is some of the double coupon double talk you will hear.

You can do incredibly well with a planned shopping spree at a store that doubles coupons, even with a restrictive policy. And its a bonus for you if they also accept competing store coupons!
