Confirmed! Postal Price Increase

You might have read the earlier post about my thought that the postal rate was going to be increased. Well I can now say that this information is confirmed. The postal service released an announcement late yesterday that stated that there will in fact be an increase in first class stamps and other postage starting in May, on May 11th to be exact. This does give you time to stock up on the forever stamp to save money. The Forever stamps can be used as first class postage at any time, even for future increases. Right now, you’ll pay the … Continue reading

Getting Bestsellers for Free

I love browsing through the bookstore. There is just so much there. Before my frugal living days, it wouldn’t be odd for me to walk into a bookstore and emerge an hour later will a pile of books and $300 less in my account. Did I mention that I love books? Of course now I employ other strategies to feed my book habit, such as trading with friends, going to book sales, hitting the library and using paperbackswap.com. But one thing I miss about those spending sprees is discovering new books and pouring through the glossy bestsellers. The bookstore always … Continue reading

Great Deal at Borders Bookstores!

I am just so excited about this deal that I couldn’t wait to get back to my computer to share it with you! I should be doing a million other things right now, but I had to write and tell you before the best books are gone. Yesterday, we visited the mall to pick up a present for my youngest son. It was a quick trip, since we had some birthday celebrating to do. Fortunately for me, I passed by the Borders Bookstore. it was actually a Borders Express, but the manager assured me that this great deal was available … Continue reading

Buying Books from the Library

Did you know that most libraries sell books for a real bargain? Some even give books away for free. I did well adding to my book collection, yesterday with my trip to the local library. Okay, I know, I know. I just wrote about using Paper Back Swap versus checking out books from the library. As I mentioned in that article, there is a lot to be said for using Paper Back Swap as my main supply source for feeding my reading habit. But, with yesterday’s trip to the local library, I think I may have the best of both … Continue reading

Paper Back Swap vs The Library

I think I am finally coming around to the idea of using Paper Back Swap. At first, I didn’t think it was a very frugal choice. After all, there is still the cost of mailing the books: $2.13 to $2.47 (more for delivery confirmation), whereas getting books from the library is free. Of course, you don’t get to keep the library books, whereas with Paper Back Swap you can add favorite books to your personal shelves permanently. Oh, in case you aren’t familiar with Paper Back Swap, the way it works is pretty simple. You join and upload nine or … Continue reading

Frugal Art: Make Your Own Bookplates

Want great visual art without the high prices? From Grandma Moses to Dali, you can have the artist you want for a fraction of the cost. Here is a trick I learned while working as the manager of a chic little gallery in a quaint Connecticut town. If you have your eye on a print but don’t want to spend a lot, you can hang a bookplate on your wall. What is more, if you are frugal, you can even make your own. What is a bookplate? A bookplate is the termed used for an unbound page of a book. … Continue reading

Frugal Shopping: One CD and Five Different Offers

Are you getting the best deal on your purchase when you shop? I’ll show you how one CD can have five different prices and how you can find the best offer. I am always surprised that more people don’t research their purchases before they buy. It is so easy to do in this age of the internet. E-mail offers, retail stores with web sites, and of course savings forums and the Deals Blog here on Families.com make comparison shopping relatively painless. Prompted by an offer from Borders in my e-mail, I decided I wanted to reward all of my hard … Continue reading

Frugal Books: Find Your Used Book Sales Today!

There is nothing like visiting a used book sale. I live the thrill of walking through rooms and rooms of books. Whether the books are carefully organized by subject or jumbled this way and that, each visit to a used book sale is a great adventure. One of my favorite book sales is held in the Radnor Library, here in Pennsylvania. This sale boasts thousands of well-cared-for books that occupy an entire basement. The sale is held twice a year and people come from other states just to experience it. It was at this sale last year that we hit … Continue reading

Free Books from the Paperback Book Swap

Even though I’m a bibliophile and love to browse bookstores, it’s difficult for me to part with my hard-earned money to purchase them new. Of course, there are exceptions such as needed textbooks, but I’m an eternal bargain hunter. So the Paperback Book Swap was a natural fit for me! No money is involved except for the postage to send your books out to other people. Here’s how it works: You start by listing nine books, which gives you three credits. In the future, you’ll get one credit per book mailed. The three credits are to get you started. Search … Continue reading

Going Gourmet

A couple of weeks ago, we were in one of those fancy chain gourmet stores looking at some dinnerware. Our current set is a hand-me-down set that is missing many pieces. The pieces are missing mostly thanks to Mrs Butterfingers over here…me. While I was pregnant, my joints would loosen up so much that my husband swears he could hear my bones rattle around as I walked. An average rate of one broken plate/bowl/cup a month times three pregnancies..well, you get the picture. While we were in that gourmet store, we spied a very pretty canister of gourmet chocolate waffle … Continue reading
