Here Come the Freebies! – Week of November 16, 2011

There are two types of “freebies”. There are the type where you have to purchase something in order to get a second one for free. There also are “freebies” that truly are free, just waiting for you to pick them up. Those are the most fun, but, the other type can be valuable as well. Starbucks will give you one holiday drink for FREE when you purchase a holiday drink. The free one, of course, has to be of equal, or lesser, value as the one that you are paying for. The holiday drinks at Starbucks include: Peppermint Mocha, new … Continue reading

Free Baby Magazines

When my first child was born, I spent hours pouring over baby magazines while he played happily next to me. Sometimes he would even “read” the magazine with me, looking at the photos of babies and deciding which pages were worthy of tearing to shreds in his glee. The magazines were very valuable to me for their advice. The stories from parents who were going through the same things I was, as a new mom, were comforting and sometimes hysterically funny. I remember sitting on the floor in the baby’s room with my magazines, the morning sun streaming in, and … Continue reading

Stock Up on Freebies for the Outdoorsy Guy/Gal

Okay, now that the holidays are almost behind me, I am thinking of birthday and “just because” gifts. For immediate friends and family, I like to sign up for freebies I know they will like. Clif Bar is sponsoring a marathon training kit. In the kit, you can receive booklets with training tips and multiple samples of their product. In case you are wondering what a Clif Bar actually is, it is an energy bar–one of the very first that was widely available to outdoorsy people. It was usually sold in places such as Eastern Mountain Sports. Clif Bar is … Continue reading

12 Free Cookbooks by Mail!

As winter sets in and is filled with days indoors, I love to make my home warm and inviting with the yummy smells of cooking. Cooking at home is a very frugal thing to do, especially when it is done with ingredients you already have on hand. For example, I had a very large stockpile of condensed milk that I needed to rotate. I was tired of of the same old recipes and was racking my brain for something new. Thanks to one of these cookbooks, though, I made up some pound cake that was just right. I would have … Continue reading

How to Make Oat Flour

Oats are still pretty inexpensive around here, especially when you consider all of the nutritional value that they contain. Oat flour is also gluten free in and of itself. Buying oat flour at the grocery store or specialty store can be quite expensive. This is because there isn’t as much demand of oat flour, making it a specialty item. You are much better off making it yourself. While oat flour won’t behave like wheat flour, you can use it in baking when you combine it with wheat flour (white or whole wheat). If flour prices are getting a bit to … Continue reading

Postal Rate Increase Coming and How to Save

In May of this year, there will another price increase in the cost of the first class stamp. This means that it will cost more to mail a standard letter, bill payment, invitation, etc. The Office of the Postal System has not yet announced exactly how much that increase will be, however I have some guesses. Because there are regulations on how much an increase can be based on current inflation, it is unlikely that the increase will be more than two cents, changing the rate from 42 cents for a first class stamp to 44 cents or less. Personally … Continue reading

The Ethics of Samples

Free samples can be wonderful. Trying out a product can save you from costly mistakes in buying it, if you find that you don’t like it. You can be adventurous and try out something new that you might not otherwise have experienced. For some, the super sample people, it is an opportunity to reduce your budget by taking advantage of getting things for free. I know one lady who never buys perfume, because she is stocked with samples from the fragrance counter. And the samples may even come in handy when you your supplies are running low. For example, let’s … Continue reading

Postal Increase: Stock Up on Stamps

Sending snail mail is one of the most frugal things you can do, because you really get a lot of service for a little stamp. Imagine, you can send a letter anywhere within the United States for only 41 cents. You can’t even buy a candy bar for that amount without some serious couponing. And, it doesn’t take that much more to send a letter overseas. But, as you may or may not know, the postage rates are going up here in America, starting on May 12th. The first class stamp will rise from 41 cents to 42 cents. Media … Continue reading
